Celebrating 50 golden years of marriage

David (76) and Barbara Williams (72) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday at the Engineers Golf Club in Marievale.

The couple wed in Springs’ Anglican Church on October 8, 1966 and took their wedding photos at the Windmill Park.

Their eldest daughter Bernadette Holderness (43) and her sister, Shirley-Ann Williams (39) celebrated the day with their parents and other relatives.

“I have been married for 14 years, my parents are definitely role models and we can only hope to spend such a lifetime with our partners,” says Bernadette.

David and Barbara say the secret to any marriage is communication.

“I remember their bedroom door being closed as things were discussed, even arguments,” says Bernadette.

“They never argued in front of us and as we sat down around a table with every meal the TV and other devices were always switched off.”

Bernadette adds that their parents always made them feel comfortable enough to discuss matters with them.

“They were never ashamed to show their love and affection for one another in front of us.”

She laughingly adds that her father was always a prankster and always pulled pranks on family members.

“They were always smiling and happy.”

She adds that they always gave each other space.

“My father fished and flew radio-controlled aeroplanes and my mom was happy to take her book, sit in the shade and read.

“They were happy being together, but didn’t necessarily have to do something together.”

Bernadette explains that her parents had many ups and downs.

“Sick children, troubles at work or school, health problems, the usual everyday things, but they had the willingness to sit and work a problem or situation out.

“This was key to their successful marriage,” Bernadette concludes.
