WATCH: Duck pond fills up with water

Kathy and her husband Henry Preston (62) have been watching the water at the George Sutter Park duck pond in Selection Park reaching dangerously low levels over the past few months.

“We have been feeding the geese and ducks since they were relocated to the duck pond in 2015 and had a few close encounters with the pond running dry,” says Kathy.

This comes after the third borehole pump recently broke, leaving their feathered friends in dire straights as the ducklings and goslings couldn’t get out of the dam due to the low water level.

Kathy says watching how they battled to get out was sad, so they decided to feed them on the dry islands within the pond.

After several calls for help, she decided to post their concern on social media and within a day, two local businessmen reacted to her call.

Petro Bothma read the post and immediately discussed it with local businessman Cliff Carr, who contacted Kathy for more information on the situation.

“Helping out is my way of giving back to the community in appreciation of their support of my business over the years,” he says.

The costs were shared between Cliff and another local businessman Matthew Msiza, who installed the pump on Wednesday evening.

“Giving back to the community is always a good idea,” says Matthew.

According to Kathy she and Henry were present when the first drops of water were visible after the pump was installed.

On Thursday morning the water level had risen substantially.

“Watching the fish enjoying the oxygen-filled water, which they need to survive, was exciting,” says Kathy.

The ducklings and goslings are now able to, with ease, climb in and out of the water onto the middle island as well as the one at the side of the pond.

“Soon they will all be grazing on the green grass on the outskirts of the pond,” says Kathy.
