Good report back at Child Welfare AGM

The Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society held its annual general meeting at the SpringsCare Community Centre on Wednesday.

Dario Froli, chairman of the society, gave a brief feedback on what the organisation had to face in 2015.

“It was a difficult year, but thanks to dedicated staff we have survived.”

He mentioned his concern on where the social morals of society are heading.

Frolio says parents are not teaching their children at home, teachers are not teaching children at school and social media speeds up the moral degeneration through the use of cellphones which many children have access to.

Couple this with substance abuse for both parents and children and you have a recipe for society to be a degenerate mob of chaos.

“This is what social workers have to face on a daily basis and they do it because they care what happens to our children,” he says.

The question “Do we care enough for children, like we do for the rhino and dolphins?” was raised at the meeting.

Frolio says he gets his inspiration from the staff who run the society.

Luchelle Ramsaroop from Child Welfare SA says national office staff are there to serve and support “our affiliates”.

“Together we intend to build strong bonds and a close partnership, we will be there to assist, counsel and learn from each other in serving the children,” she says.

When Sanet van Moerkerken, the society’s project manager, prepared the social worker’s report she thought about what leadership means.

“I have come to the realisation that unfortunately, leadership doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all definition,” she says.

Child Welfare staff believe children are the core business and their best interest is paramount in all the decisions made.

She mentioned how blessed they are with the assistance of a group of people from Hi5Kids Recovery Unit and the SAPS women who help them with drug testing, support when home visits have to be done, and some are even willing to take children into temporary safe care.

“Your assistance is invaluable and I often wonder where you have been all these years,” says van Moerkerken.

She ended her report with a quote from Ivan Scheier, “Doing more that you have to because you want to, in a cause you consider good”.
