Art deco buildings prioritised

Stakeholders met in Third Avenue on Friday, to launch an initiative to repair, upgrade and protect the town's art deco buildings under the Heritage Act.

Springs boasts the second largest collection of art deco buildings in the world after Miami, Florida, in the USA.

As part of Tourism Month, the metro, along with the Chamber of Commerce, is spearheading the cleaning project, which falls under the Mayoral Clean City Project.

Given the local and international interest in the conservation of this important aspect of our heritage, it is incumbent upon the metro and local businesses to identify the buildings which fall within this category and to determine the improvements required.

The goal is then to encourage owners to maintain these buildings to an acceptable standard and to market them to the tourism industry.
