WATCH: Springs’ entrance beautification project progresses

On Thursday stakeholders met on the corner of Paul Kruger Highway and Orpiment Avenue to sign-off partial practical completion of phase one of the Springs Entrance Beautification Project.

Contract workers planted flowers in planter boxes while officials discussed the project’s progress.

“We have embarked on a project to uplift the entrances of our towns,” says area manager of the Ekurhuleni Parks and Cemeteries division Lindiwe Makubalo.

The purpose of this project is to create a defined town entrance for Springs. It forms part of five other town entrance beautification projects including Duduza and KwaThema.

The master plan has been developed to ensure a uniform design language all the way along Main Reef and Paul Kruger roads.

“The city’s vision is to develop all the town entrances in the same way in order to create a unified city identity,” says metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

The project will be completed in 13 phases.

Phases one to six include colourful bands of hardy planting, custom concrete furniture such as bollards, planters, bins and benches, blue fibre glass feature poles, and paving alternating with stone pitching in bands on the traffic islands.

Sidewalks will be paved and bicycle lanes provided where possible.

In September 2015, the consultant’s brief was extended to develop a master plan for the entire Main Reef Road from Orpiment Avenue in the north to South Main Reef Road in the south.

Around R1.5-million has been approved for the completion of phase one but a further R60-million will need to be sourced to complete the entire master plan.

The project was started in August 2015 and phase one is expected to be completed in November.
