Heritage Tea for Grannies was an event combined with Grandparents Tea which is held annually at the centre.

Principal of the centre, Prisheen Daya, says this is one of first heritage celebrations and they intend to make it an annual event.

“We will focus on our grandparents whom I believe are the carriers of our living heritage,” says Prisheen.

She believes they are valuable and contribute to the raising of their grandchildren.

“They share their wisdom and knowledge which is vital to the family,” says Prisheen.

The children shared their different cultures which included the different ways of greeting.

Some examples included sanbonani (isiZulu), dumelang (SeSotho), and namaste (Hindi).

“The information given by the children were exceptional and very informative,” says Prisheen.

Four-year-old Rifqa Harif’s information was about South Africa’s gold and diamond mining.

They mentioned the national fish, galjoen, which is a game fish found on the South African coast.

The rest of the information included the Springbok, Blue Crane, yellow-wood tree and the six different colours of the national flag.

He also informed everyone of interesting places to visit including Table Mountain in Cape Town and Robben Island.

“Grandparents showcase their stories and heritage, which is important for the future of our children,” says Prisheen.
