A look into Wheels and Wings

The Springs Advertiser and African Reporter's Wheels and Wings event was held at the Springs Airfield on Saturday.

Family and friends had a fun day out at Wheels and Wings on Saturday. Ruth Simwinga (left) brought her family to the Springs Airfield to enjoy live entertainment and various flea market stalls. Her son Ayanda (14) and his friend Maya Sibeko (14) were full of smiles along with Aliko Simwinga (3) and Mengo (5).

The event brought musicians from around Gauteng to give the day a fresh spark.

As entry requirement, the Addie collected non-perishable food items and cash donations, which will be used to purchase food, for distribution to Vita Nova Centre, the Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare and the KwaThema Stimulation Centre.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS), who set up shop for the day, reported that of the 47 people who attended their stall, they received 26 units of blood.

“Every unit counts so we’re happy with 26,” says Terrance Pillay, SANBS’s Benoni public relations practitioner.

The EMPD K9 Dog Unit showed off their dogs’ intellect with a display at the Wheels and Wings. From left are Augostino Tarr with Ora, Attie Fourie with Rango, Andries Strydom with Raka and Willem van Zyl with Gabie. These dogs are trained to detect drugs, explosives and firearms as well as to ‘arrest’ fleeing culprits.

Attie Fourie from the EMPD K9 Dog Unit entertained the crowd as Rango showed them his skills by demonstrating how the dogs sniff out hidden weapons, drugs and explosives.

The Color Blew, made up of (from left) Marius Cronje, Liaan Horton, Armando Santos and Timothy James, played at the Wheels and Wings.

Robin and Debbie Garret had loads of fun at the Wheels and Wings event on Saturday selling different kinds of puddings.

The EMPD Equestrian Unit came to say hello at the Wheels and Wings on Saturday. From the left are Const Maurice Grove on Golden Horse, Lt Phumi Mahlangu on Speckles, Const Graham Allan , Const Martin Pool on Impi, Maj Ronald Botha on David and Const Clifford Viljoen.

Daniel Pawson (left), Richard Deacon, Travers Whiteside and James Deacon make up Last Chance Seattle who performed at the Wheels and Wings at the Springs Airfield on Saturday.

One of the bands who performed at the Wheels and Wings on Saturday was The Barcode Bandits made up of Ryan Zimbler (singer and guitarist) and Marc Barclay (drummer).
