Springs rates top five for murder

Springs had the fourth-highest murder rate in the annual crime statistics in Gauteng which were released on Friday.

Capt Johannes Ramphora Springs police spokesman says the statistics show an increase of 11 murder cases reported at the police station.

However, the statistics are issued for the financial year from April 2015 to April 2016.

“Gang-related illegal mining activities at Grootvlei Mine contributed to the high murder rate,” he says.

The last incident reported was reported in October 2015 (Illegal mining violence leaves two dead).

Statistics are as follow:

• Armed robbery increased by 46.

• Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm decreased by 23.

• Assault decreased by 14.

• Attempted murder 75 increased by one.

• Business robbery increased by 37.

• Culpable homicide down by 21.

• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs decreased by 58.

• Drug-related crime decreased by 258.

• Fraud decreased by one.

• Hijacking decreased by four.

• House robbery decreased by 86.

• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased by 11.

• Malicious damage to property increased by 21.

• Murder 80 increased by 11.

• Robbery decreased by 50.

• Sexual offences 144 increased by three.

• Shoplifting decreased by two.

• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased by 17.

• Theft out of motor vehicle increased by 106.

Ramphora says he is proud of the police members who work around the clock to keep the crime rate down.
