Gibela partnered with Math Centre to help high school students

Local high schools students will benefit from Gibela and Maths Centre, a learning institution partnership.

Gibela recently signed a three-year partnership with the centre.

The institution is focused on promoting excellence in mathematics, science, technology and entrepreneurship.

With the assistance of the Department of Basic Education, the centre is providing learners from 17 schools identified in Nigel, Duduza and KwaThema, with mathematics, science and English classes.

So far, three schools, NN Ndebele Secondary School in Duduza, Phulong Secondary School in KwaThema and Nigel Secondary School, have been identified as hubs.

Pamella Radebe, Gibela’s communications director says their commitment to its economic development responsibilities has never been stronger.

“The partnership between Gibela and Maths Centre is an example of this commitment put in practice.”

The classes, held every Saturday, are intended to provide extra support to learners in Grade 10, 11 and 12 with their studies. “So far, 450 students from 17 schools in Nigel, Duduza and Kwa-Thema have begun classes.

We are excited to see the programme grow,” says Pamella.

There are currently 150 learners each from in-area feeder schools who attend these Saturday tutorials.

There are 50 learners in each class and Gibela sponsors the teaching aids for the educators and learning aids for the students as well as the overall cost of the intervention.

Gibela also introduced the Railway Introduction Short Course, aimed at students from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training institution, as a pilot at Ekurhuleni East College (EEC) in 2015.

This programme covers railway history, infrastructure, operations and maintenance and day visits at the operation and maintenance centres.

To date, at least 100 students from Kwa-Thema Campus have attended the course.
