SAPS arrest 56 illegal immigrants during operation

A Springs police operation was held on Friday in the Everest Informal Settlements.

The operation was commissioned by the Springs Station Commander, Brig Tembeka Gwebushe with the aim of preventing crime and also to search for illegal mining equipment and illegal immigrants.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the search yielded positive results and drugs, alcohol and a 303 rifle and scope was found.

Police confiscated a generator, drugs and alcohol and several arrests were made.

Ramphora says 345 pirate DVDs were confiscated as well as a toy gun.

“We arrested 56 illegal immigrants, six suspects for being drunk in public and one suspect for possession of an illegal firearm,” he says.

SAPS took those arrested to the police cells.

The illegal immigrants will be taken to the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp, which is a detention centre for undocumented migrants.

Ramphora says the seven arrested will appear in court soon.
