Thulani enters the next level in his art

Thulani Nhlapo officially opened his first solo exhibition at the Springs Art Gallery on Saturday.

The exhibition will run Monday to Friday and on Saturdays until August 20.

This humble yet excited KwaThema artist says he is overwhelmed with where his art has taken him thus far.

“It is a very special moment for me to exhibit my work and on top of it all at the Springs Art Gallery,” he says.

One of his favourite paintings is The playing child.

A few months ago Thulani saw a child playing with a ball on her own.

“It touched me that she was playing alone, so I took the ball and started rolling it towards her, soon we had fun playing with the ball.”

After taking several photos of the child, he went home and it took him an hour to draw two charcoal paintings of a playing child.

Art gallery curator Thabo Sekoila says Thulani has come a long way, and that he is taking the reputation of art to the next level.

“He can unleash his ideas and plan to grow even more in his form of skills. For us it is only the beginning, but for him and his work it is a step forward into the right direction,” Thabo adds.

Thulani will next enter the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Award.
