Epilepsy sufferer experiences pain at FERH

Geduld Extension resident Sanet Kuyler (32) experienced three weeks of agony after a nurse removed a drip from her left arm at the Far East Rand Hospital (FERH).

She claims negligence on the part of the doctor who performed the procedure on her on July 5.

This epilepsy sufferer says she was suffering from severe headaches for some time and decided to see a doctor at FERH.

At the hospital, the doctor on duty allegedly suggested a CT-scan to establish the cause of Kuyler’s headaches.

Before the scan, Kuyler claims a doctor inserted a drip into her left arm.

“I could feel the needle against the bones when the needle was inserted into my arm and I immediately informed the doctor, ” she says.

Kuyler claims nothing was done to ease the pain she experienced at the time.

Although she is happy the CT results were negative except for the chronic right maxillary sinusitis, she has been suffering discomfort in her wrist and forearm since the procedure was done.

Kuyler’s hand is swollen and bruised and her arm has been numb since the incident.

“All I want to know is what the reason behind this is and how long it is going to take before I can use my left hand again,” she says.

FERH spokesman Hendrik Buda confirms the patient visited the hospital on July 5 and that a radiologist consulted Kuyler.

The radiologist gave Kuyler the CT-scan results and referred her to a medical practioner to look at her swollen arm.

“After the treatment at the hospital, Kuyler was requested to come back to the hospital on July 15, but she could not and confirmed that she could only come on July 16.

Kuyler did honour her appointment on the above mentioned date and was seen by a surgical doctor.

Buda says the doctor saw the swollen hand and suggested to admit Kuyler, but she refused admission saying she needed to collect her medication on July 20.

“If the numbness of the arm persists, she is advised to come back to the hospital for further treatment,” he adds.
