Give more than 67 minutes

Selcourt Methodist Church volunteers used their 67 Minutes for Mandela Day to do minor repairs at Presidentia, in Paul Krugersoord, last Saturday.

The Rev Charlie Wernich (39) and a few Nominations Father’s Group volunteers fixed leaking taps and toilets, fitted window handles, changed light bulbs, added putty where needed and also painted cement here and there.

“We have been reaching out to the elderly for three years and don’t just spend 67 minutes for Mandela Day at Presidentia; in fact, we extend these minutes quite substantially,” he says.

The volunteers visit the municipal homes three times a year.

“Whatever light that needs fixing, we try to fix,” says Charlie.

However, he feels that this is not what the day is about, but rather what they accomplish every time they visit Presidentia.

Charlie is quite impressed with the maintenance work done by the Ekurhuleni Metro.

While Pat Kelly (68) was preparing the boerewors donated by Operation Snowdrop, Elvine Tait (45) and Margie Botha (66) were preparing the rolls.

Most of the residents, including Dorothy Vlassopoulus (82), Piet Cooks (70), Joey Bennett (69) and Ria de Villiers (77), enjoyed the boerewors rolls handed out to the residents.

“We also appreciate all the work done throughout the year,” says Joey.
