Hobo costumes reveal different characters

Malan Nel Dienssentrum hosted a hobo party for its members on Wednesday.

The 72 members were all dressed up in their hobo outfits and enjoyed their tea, lunch and dessert in hobo style.

“The members were excited and exceeded our wildest expectations with their creative costumes,” says centre manager Sarie Breytenbach.

She says the excitement was overwhelming yet spontaneous.

The decor selected was well suited to the occasion with hessian tablecloths, newspaper place mats and plastic knives and forks, while cold drinks were served in plastic cups to round off the beautifully decorated tables.

A scrumptious lunch of lamb curry and bread rolls was served, which some of the residents enjoyed eating with their hands, and was followed by a ‘fashion show‘ to choose the winners of the best dressed award on the day.

Winning first prize, Hannes Breytenbach (65) walked away with a bottle of wine.

Johny Lange (74) took second place and received a packet of biltong, while Tom de Wet (88) won third prize and received a box of chocolates.

Sarie says the most interesting female outfit prize went to Lettie van Staden (69) with an anonymous decision by the judges.

“Lettie’s pregnant fairy outfit and hospital bag gained a lot of attention.

“She was assisted by Johny, just in case she needed to be rushed off to hospital,” says Sarie.

Lettie won a poncho made and sponsored by Loretta Coleman (64), a club member.

Second prize went to Mavis Nel and the rest of the third, fourth and fifth prize men and women winners, each won a knitted beanie and gloves.

Sarie says in proper ‘hobo’ style it was quite a battle over a bottle of wine, much to the amusement of the rest of the ‘hobos’.

“But the wine was in fact just black tea,” she adds.
