EMPD nab suspect who escaped from police cells eight years ago

A suspect was arrested eight years after he escaped from the Springs Police cells.

A suspect, wanted for murder, was arrested by two EMPD officers at a petrol station on the corner of Plantation and Main Reef roads, Springs Extension at 9.30pm on Friday.

The 42-year-old suspect was arrested for the first time in May 2008, but escaped from the police cells where he was detained.

Officers Louis Els and Louwtjie du Toit recently followed up on information they received from the community on the suspect’s whereabouts and started their search for the wanted man.

Els says after they were called out to a scene about two weeks ago, where the same suspect was allegedly intimidating people at the civic centre, they removed the suspect from the premises, but didn’t arrest him.

However, Els wrote down the suspect’s ID number and upon further investigation he discovered the suspect is wanted.

“We followed up on all the information we received and finally managed to trace the suspect to the petrol station, where we arrested him,” says Els.

The suspect was taken to the SAPS cells, where he will remain until his court appearance.
