Metro not liable for stolen vehicle

When a woman's car was stolen at the Springs Clinic in June, the community enquired about the safety of their vehicles while visiting the clinic.

The security guards were reportedly not responsive when they were confronted by the victim and apparently did not notice any break-in into any vehicle despite broken glass lying on the ground where the stolen vehicle had been parked.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the clinic has a big yard situated behind the Springs Civic Centre in Springs Extension.

“There is limited parking bays for the public hence some people park next to the fence perimeter,” says Gadebe.

However, there are two security personnel on duty during the day and one at night.

There is a disclaimer notice that people entering the premises do so at their own risk as council will not be liable for damage or loss of any items whilst on the premises.

“The recommendation that vehicles be signed in and out when entering the premises will be discussed with the law enforcement department to determine its feasibility,” says Gadebe.

The security guards are provided by a private service provider contracted through the metro’s public safety division and issues of increasing security will be discussed with the service provider.

“The metro’s health and social development department apologises for the inconvenience to its clients,” he says.
