Trench on Fifth Street a disaster for motorists

“The trench has been like this for three weeks,” says car guard Cindy Ngejane (52).

A massive fountain of water was seen in Fifth Street, Springs CBD on June 15.

The report stated that the water fountain was a result of metro contract workers accidentally damaging the water pipe.

It was communicated by the metro that the trenches would be closed when the holes have dried out.

On Friday, car guard, Cindy Ngejane (52), said the metro still had not returned to complete the job of permanently sealing the hole.

“The trench has been like this for three weeks,” says Cindy.

“The metro contract workers were supposed to have been back to fix it already.”

Cindy says the hole was much deeper than what it currently appears as sand was used as an interim measure to fill the hole until it dries up.

“All the big cars that drive over the trench just dig a deeper hole into the trench so it will never be a proper solution,” she says.

“They just need to fix it.”

There are no warning signs or measures taken to alert drivers about the trench from afar.

Cindy says this has sparked a lot of complaints from motorists.

“Some people come past speeding then, by the time they see the trench, it is too late,” she adds.

“They all ask why no cautionary measures have been taken.”

Cindy says a lot of cars stand great risk of being damaged as a result of this ever-deepening trench and that will be the onus of the metro for not taking the correct measures.

“We will have to wait and see when they will eventually come to the party,” she closes.

Questions have been sent to the metro for comment.
