Streetlight damaged due to accident witnessed by security guard

John Phiri (35), a security guard at the Selection Park Swimming Pool, says the streetlight situated on the corner of Pridgeon Avenue has not been in working order for a week, since a motorist crashed into it.

The lamp pole has a significant dent in it and has tipped over slightly.

The surrounding pavement has also been damaged.

“At about 3.45am last Sunday, I heard the sound of speeding cars coming down the road,” says John.

“Shortly after, I heard a slight crash.”

He adds that, while he walking towards the scene from inside the swimming pool premises, he heard the voices of two men who were arguing.

He he also suspect that the fight turned physical, as he heard noises that sounded like punches being thrown.

“The men sounded drunk and like they had been following each other from wherever they came from,” adds John.

He halted at the wall.

When he looked to see what had happened, he saw two cars parked at the corner, one of which had bumped into the streetlight’s lamp pole.

“I hid behind the wall of the premises and tried to observe what was happening,” says John.

“The verbal exchange between the two motorists continued for a while, until they eventually left.”

John adds that there were two men and three women at the scene.

“Since that day, the streetlight has not been working and that makes it very dark at this corner,” he explains.

“I am more concerned about the fact that the people who crashed into the light left it this way and have not assumed any responsibility as a result.”

John’s says his concern is the fact that many more incidents, like the one he witnessed, can occur as a result of the corner streetlight being broken.

“Someone has to take responsibility and someone has to fix the light,” he says.

Questions have been sent to the metro, as well as the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.
