No hope for service delivery improvements

Strubenvale resident Johan Perkins (71) says the refuse removal services operated by the Ekurhuleni Metro are still poor.

This is the third incident that Johan has reported regarding the slow turn-around time for refuse removal, and he says there is still no improvement.

“The refuse was supposed to have been collected on Tuesday, last week, yet, on Friday, we were still taking the litter in and out of our yards in hope of our refuse being removed.”

The refuse, which was collected a week later, on Tuesday afternoon, had become a hopeless issue for residents.

Johan explains that, eventually, residents would not even bother with the tedious admin of taking out the refuse for collection, as the metro has previously failed to collect and to communicate any refuse collection breakdowns that may be a factor.

Instead, he says, they were informed that the refuse would be collected on Saturday.

“I called the metro’s call centre on Friday, and they were unable to provide a reference number or to accommodate my complaint,” he adds.

“Instead, I decided to wait for the refuse to be collected on Saturday, and still it was a no show.”

He adds that further down the block from him, the metro collected the residents’ refuse last Monday, but failed to collect refuse from his Athlone Road residence.

“I still don’t understand how they can collect refuse a block from us, but fail to collect it from our street, this was not the first time, so what is the reason now?”

Johan believes that the issue of the poor refuse removal service should be taken to the mayoral office, as the problem is reaching epic proportions, as opposed to being alleviated by the metro.

“It is just a hopeless case,” he says.

Questions have been sent to the metro for comment.
