An additional arrest was made for reckless driving when the driver allegedly caused an accident.
“Springs CBD is notorious for drunken driving and generally for reckless and inconsiderate driving on Friday nights, especially when it is month end.
“This unacceptable situation prompted the EMPD Springs Precinct to conduct an operation on Friday between 7pm and midnight,” says Lieut Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman.
He adds, “The 16 arrested drivers were nabbed along the 1st , 2nd and 3rd streets in Springs town and one driver, who was speeding unnecessarily, was arrested when he caused two other vehicles to collide.”
There were no injuries sustained in the accident
All the arrested drivers were detained at Springs police station after being charged with suspected driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving.
They were expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
