Everest unsafe due to no mast lights

The problem of high mast lights currently not working in Everest informal settlement has been reported to the metro a few times over the past two months.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin also reported the high mast lights to the municipality, but he claims the metro said they “are working on a plan to protect the cables from being stolen again after it is being installed”.

He says he requested and got the municipality to install the high mast lights at Everest in 2012 and the two new high masts are currently in the process of being installed in Gugulethu.

The cables supplying electricity to the mast lights are connected to the robot at the intersection of Welgedacht and Enstrada roads in Payneville.

The cable has recently been stolen and Sheodin says the metro will, hopefully, sort out the problem soon .

“The residents of the informal settlement need to take ownership of the lighting, as it worked well from 2012 until now, by reporting those that are responsible for cable theft,” he says.

“But,” he says, “the concern remains whether the cables will be stolen again”.

According to the Sheodin the municipality will sort out the robots soon and are looking into installing new cables to the high mast lights as Everest is totally unsafe without them.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of publishing.
