Springs gang rapists convicted to 27 years each

Nyokonye Petros Moroaneng (30), Khoele Serame (age unknown) and Lehlohonolo Moeketsi (23) were recently convicted in the Springs Regional Court for rape, assault and robbery.

According to police spokesman, Capt Johannes Ramphora, this comes after a gang rape incident which took place on January 30, 2015.

The incident occurred at around 1.05am after the complainant (age unknown) was coming from a tavern in Slovo Park.

On her way home, she was pulled off the road by three men and taken to the Bakerton Stadium where she was raped, assaulted and robbed of her cash and cellphone.

The woman returned to Gugulethu Everest Informal Settlement and told her boyfriend what had happened.

The couple called the police and she was taken to hospital for treatment of the injuries she sustained during the assault.

The case was investigated and the trio were arrested later that day at around 1.30pm in the Gugulethu Everest Informal Settlement.

These three men made their first appeared in the Springs Regional Court on February 2, 2015.

They were denied bail and the case was then repeatedly remanded until the men’s conviction on June 14, when they made their last appearance.

The three men were given 20 years each for the rape, one year imprisonment each for assault and six years imprisonment each for the robbery and have started serving their sentence at Modderbee Prison.
