Church dresses up and races

On Thursday, the NG Kerk in Strubenvale hosted a race similar to that of the concept behind ‘The Amazing Race’ television programme, as well as a fancy dress competition.

Church members got together in 10 teams of four and departed from the church to various businesses as stop-points.

“Each business represents a leg of the race,” says Kobus Jordaan, who is one of the event organisers, “and once a challenge has been completed at each leg of the race, we get a clue for the next stop-point.”

“We even had one of our members pose with a snake wrapped across his neck for a photo as one of the challenges.”

Each team paid an entry fee, whose proceeds will go towards Loeries Orphange.

There was also a large variety of food and drinks on sale.

The proceeds donated to the orphanage will go towards payment for their year-end trip to the coast.

“We have been active with the orphanage since last year,” says Kobus, “and have been actively invested in ensuring that they want for nothing.”

The winning team for the best fancy dress competition also received a small prize, as a token of appreciation from the church.

The initiative was also aimed at giving exposure to local businesses who wish to be actively involved in helping the community.

The event, which was a first of its kind, received favourable support from community members and has motivated future endeavours of a similar nature within the churches annual calendar.

“We are definitely pleased with the turn-out we have received,” says Kobus, “and we definitely hope to make it an annual event.”

The church would like to thank its sponsors as well as the businesses who allowed them to successfully execute the event.
