Over the last three weeks members of the project have visited Laerskool Werda, Laerskool Welgedacht and Payneville Primary School.
A total of 500 bags, which are washable and reusable sanitary pad and pantie packs designed to last for several years, have been distributed.
“It is a reality that many young girls are forced to stay at home and miss school when they are menstruating due to a lack of access to sanitary pads,” says Stevi Glendinning, one of the project members.
The project is aimed at helping to change the lives of young girls within the Springs community.
“At each school we were also able to teach the girls about menstruation and women’s health,” says Stevi.
They also showed the girls how to use and look after their washable pads.
Each girl also received a lunch pack on the day.
Teachers from the School Based Support (SBS) team will distribute the bags to underprivileged schoolgirls.
Evelyn Motoung, the SBS coordinator, says they are grateful for the wonderful support from Stevi and her team.
“The girls are happy and relieved. These bags will help them a lot,” she adds.
