Two women shot dead on one day

Two women were shot dead at the same time, in two different suburbs in Springs, last Thursday.

The first incident took place in front of Springs Girls’ High School, in Molyneux Avenue, in Selcourt, at 4pm.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says the 42-year-old woman had gone to the school to fetch her older daughter when she was shot and killed.

A black vehicle with three occupants allegedly stopped behind the woman’s vehicle, two passengers got out and one of them shot and killed the woman.

The deceased’s seven-year-old child was in the car with her and witnessed the shooting.

“We cannot say it was an attempted hijacking, because nothing was stolen from the vehicle,” says Ramphora.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital with slight injuries to her stomach.

Ramphora says they have opened murder and attempted murder cases and the motive for the attack is unknown.

The deceased’s employer said, on Friday: “She was a good employee who received several awards over the years.”

She said the loss of a wonderful person is serious, but the fact that it happened in front of children “makes it worse”.

“Our condolences to the family,” she added.

• The second incident took place in a park in Rennie Street, Selection Park, at 4pm, where a SAPS policewoman was shot and killed.

Ramphora says the 42-year-old woman was in police uniform and on her way to work when she was attacked.

“The attack was made by two unknown, armed men and the motive for the murder is unknown,” he says.

The shooting of this mother of three young children was witnessed by a 14-year-old boy.

The teen’s father says his son claims the sound of the woman’s screams drew his attention.

He saw a woman lying on her stomach on the grass in the park, while a man holding a gun fired two shots at her head.

“My son allegedly saw the man picking up something and running away,” he says.

He adds that the boy is traumatised and he has arranged for a counsellor to talk to him.

The Advertiser cannot name anyone at this stage, at the request of the police, due to the nature of this crime.
