SGB donates to the less privileged

The School Governing Body (SGB) of Vukucinge Primary School in Slovo Park has made a collective effort to donate school shoes and uniforms to 300 underprivileged learners of the school.

“We identified that some of our learners come to school in torn jerseys and old school shoes and some do not even have the proper uniform,” says Principal Mantombi Tilodi.

The initiative was pioneered by SGB treasurer Sibongile Shongwe, who approached private companies as well as the Will of God Christian Church, which is headed by Pastor Themba Mzimba.

Underprivileged learners in the school were identified, and consideration of their financial backgrounds was given, when it came to identifying which learners would benefit from the initiative.

Sibongile, who is also on the youth desk of the SAPS, says it has always been her passion to give back to the community and leave a legacy by which she will be remembered.

“When I was diagnosed with cancer I made a decision to contribute meaningfully to society and leave something that I would be remembered by, so this initiative is very close to my heart,” says Sibongile.

The school hopes to take the project further, and make it an annual drive, which can hopefully help other learners within the community at large.

“The SGB, particularly Sibongile, really go the extra mile to ensure the best interests of our learners,” says Mantombi. “Not many people are able to commit themselves so fully.

I am very pleased with the whole initiative and the response we received.”
