SAPS take infant to place of safety

The biological mother (27) of a one-year-old infant paid an admission of guilt fine for possession of dagga at the Springs Magistrate's Court today (May 26).

The Springs police received an anonymous tip-off and went to investigate the premises in Andrew Street, Pollak Park on Wednesday (May 25).

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says when the police arrived the keys to the flat were in the outside lock and the mother and her infant inside the house.

“When the police entered the house they found a packet on the table,” he says.

While searching the premises, they noticed a man pacing in and out of the flat.

Ramphora says they became suspicious and followed the man to his vehicle parked in front of the building and upon searching the vehicle, they found a packet of dagga under the front left seat of the vehicle.

The police arrested the 36-year-old man and the woman for possession of dagga and took them to the police station.

“We took the baby to a place of safety,” says Ramphora.

Both suspects paid admission of guilt fines of R500 each at court.

Ramphora says when the suspects paid the admission of guilt fine, they waive the rights to contest the matter in court.

“Both suspects now have a criminal record,” says Ramphora.
