Samaritans clear water from Nigel Road

A few good Samaritans offered their services to the community, by pumping away the water that flooded Nigel Road, in Selcourt, on Sunday (May 15).

Mark Watson (48) and his son, Joshua (20), reached out to serve the community, and motorists, after water flooded the road, due to the rain, last weekend.

The storm water drain could not drain the volume of water that accumulated in the road.

Mark, Joshua, Daniel du Plessis (24) and Mark’s four-legged assistant, Lego, decided to save the situation.

When Mark witnessed a few speeding motorists’ vehicles aquaplaning when they hit the water, he realised that the situation was becoming serious.

Daniel arrived on the scene with their honey sucker truck, which they used to suck up all the water from the road, and within an hour both lanes were cleared of all the water.

Mark says they blocked off one lane at approximately 9am on Sunday, and by 10am both lanes were cleared and traffic flow was back to normal.

“Lego was there to keep a watchful eye on the job,” says Mark.

He also claims that this was not the first time water had accumulated between Star and Waiha roads.

“The previous time it happened, the Ekurhuleni Metro allegedly blocked off the road and motorists had to take a detour,” he says, adding: “This time it wasn’t necessary.”

Mark claims he also heard of water damming up in Vogelstruisbult Road, opposite the Daggafontein Informal Settlement and says he will investigate to see if they can offer any assistance.

According to Joshua, his father loves to help people and this good deed was just a small token of his love for the community.
