SAPS nab suspect at gold mine

Springs police arrested a 44-year-old suspect in Eastvale for possession of possible gold-bearing material on Wednesday.

The man left the premises and was stopped and searched by security officers at Gold One mine.

Amanda Greybe, Springs police spokesperson, says the security officers found possible gold-bearing material in his possession and called the police for assistance.

When the police arrived they arrested the man and took him to the police station.

The suspect was given an opportunity to call his wife from a cellphone which records all the calls.

According to the security company they played the call back and heard the suspect asking his wife to clear the house of all evidence.

The police and security company went to the house and upon searching it, they found various illegal mining equipment, including a Jameson grid used to sift the soil, gold processing equipment and bottles containing gold concentrate.

“We removed all the illegal mining equipment from the house and took it to the police station,” says Greybe.

The gold-bearing material has to be analysed first to establish its street value.

Greybe says the suspect informed them he sells the gold to a Springs businessman.

The man will appear in court soon.
