High-speed chase ends in Pollak Park

A high speed chase between SAPS Crime Intelligence and EMPD Tracing Unit members ended in Springs West Road, Pollak Park, today (May 3).

A hijacked BMW 320d was found abandoned in Springs West Road after the driver and a passenger escaped on foot, after they had to stop at the traffic light at the corner of Industry and Springs West roads.

Law enforcement units found the abandoned vehicle with a 9mm pistol with four live rounds of ammunition inside.

The EMPD Tracing Unit members were on routine patrol in Fourth Street, at approximately 8am, when they spotted a man throwing a bottle at a parked white BMW.

EMPD spokesman Clifford Shongwe says the driver and a passenger allegedly noticed the EMPD vehicle and fled the scene.

Shongwe says it was a joint law enforcement chase by members from the SAPS Crime Intelligence and EMPD Tracing Unit.

The units finally caught up with the BMW in Pollak Park.

After further investigation it was discovered that the vehicle number plates were false and two different number plates, also false, were found in the vehicle.

Shongwe says the vehicle’s VIN number was used to track down information.

“The vehicle was reported hijacked in Yeoville, Johannesburg, in October 2015,” he says.

The hijacked vehicle will be taken to the Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Safeguarding Unit.
