Mask protects him from horrid smell in Springs

Jakes Jacobs (64) has just about had it with human waste discharges from the sewage drain in and outside his yard in Main Street in Welgedacht.

He reported a blocked sewage drain outside his property to the Ekurhuleni Metro Call Centre more than 15 days ago and received several reference numbers but no response.

According to Jacobs they had to remove the human faeces that was floating around in the sewage water with shovels because it leaves a terrible stench.

“When I leave my property on foot, I put on my mask that prevents me from breathing in the putrid smell of human waste,” he says.

“Anyone with a sense of smell will be able to smell it.”

This, he believes, poses a huge health risk, not only to him and his family, but also to his animals.

Jacobs claims that after reporting the drain for the first time, he was given numerous promises by the metro.

“It is impossible to cross the road due to the sewage running freely in the street,” he says.

Heading from one sewage pool to the next proved a challenge in itself as little streams of sewage made it impossible to cross.

“It looks like the municipality is not interested in fixing the leak, as the leak is not being attended to,” says Jacobs.

The Addie has sent enquiries to the metro but had not received any response at the time of going to print.
