Hijackers leave bait behind

A hijacked Hino truck overturned on the N17 highway, on Wednesday.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, a man was driving the truck on the N17, towards Piet Retief, in Mpumalanga, when he was forced to stop by the drivers of one red and one silver vehicle.

It is alleged that the driver of the red vehicle was travelling in front of the truck, and the driver of the silver vehicle, behind the truck.

Ramphora says three men, wearing reflector jackets, approached the truck driver after the truck had stopped, and asked for his driver’s licence.

“The truck driver produced his licence and was surprised when the three men forced him to get out of the truck and into the red vehicle,” says Ramphora.

The hijackers got into the truck and made a U-turn, which caused the truck to overturn.

The three men left the overturned truck, jumped into the two vehicles and fled the scene.

“They drove in the direction of Endicott and dropped off the truck driver there, leaving him stranded,” says Ramphora.

Ramphora adds that the truck driver could not identify the red and silver vehicles.

The contents of the truck, clothing and TVs, were left behind.

No arrests have been made.
