Metro will close holes soon

Barries Barnard watched the Ekurhuleni Metro digging 11 holes in front of marked fire hydrants approximately four weeks ago in Daggafontein Extention Five, but never saw them closing the holes.

He claims he asked the workers why they were digging these holes and was informed that some of the fire hydrant valves needed replacement.

“Leaving the holes at the entrances of residents of Lyster, Dapchick, Pikkewyn, Lepelaar and Fisheagle streets, is dangerous,” he says.

Barnard is the chairman of the CPF in the area and feels the safety of the residents is his priority; therefore, he urge the metro to close the holes as soon as possible.

“The holes of approximately 1.5m deep can easily be used by any unwanted person as a hiding place,” he says.

He feels strongly about the danger these holes pose and is adamant to close them himself.

Metro councillor Shadow Shabangu says the community need not be alarmed as the metro will close the holes soon.

“The fire hydrants needed maintenance and upon further investigation the metro noticed that some of the valves were damaged and needed to be replaced,” he says.

However, the holes need to stay open for a few weeks to make sure that these replaced valves don’t leak.

“Thereafter the holes will be closed,” says Shabangu.
