The 22nd annual Casual Day ambassadors are embarking on a countrywide roadshow this year.

This day is celebrated all over South Africa and is the foremost fundraising project for people with disabilities. Casual Day is the flagship project of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA (NCPPDSA).

Vanessa du Plessis, Casual Day project leader, says they are ready for action and the 2016 theme is ‘Up Your Game’, which will be part of the Casual Day celebrated on September 2.

“The public have been incredibly generous with their support; however, we must not be complacent in our understanding of the great need for funding in this area,” she says.

Vanessa encourages organisations involved with people with disabilities to register and to raise funds for themselves via their infrastructure.

“This funding will benefit thousands of people with disabilities through the branches of its 12 beneficiary organisations in every region,” she says.

An overall amount of R27-million has been donated by the public of which R18-m was raised by non-government organisations, while the remaining R9-m was raised through the corporate sector.

The beneficiaries of the funds collected a donation for a R10 sticker on Casual Day. This project includes 500 schools, and organisations that render services to people with disabilities.

“In a spirit of transparency, the public must also know that a portion of the funds go to running costs, but we keep them as low as possible,” she says.
