Business robbers to sit for 12 years

Tumelo Moeketsi (24) and Sipho Zwane (19), guilty of business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms, were sentenced in the Springs Magistrate's Court last Wednesday (April 6).

Both accused were sentenced to 12 years in prison of which six years are suspended for five years.

The suspects appeared before Magistrate Collen Mashego.

Moeketsi has been found guilty on another count of possession of ammunition, earning him an extra eight months behind bars.

The duo will serve their sentence in Modderbee Prison.

The duo were arrested on January 27, after they robbed a business in Brand Street, Geduld Extension.

There were three robbers involved in the robbery, who took cigarettes worth R300 and R2 000 in cash, a laptop and a cellphone and fled the scene on foot.

Springs police spokesman, Capt Johannes Ramphora, says the business owner phoned the police who, with the assistance of the community, chased the three on foot.

Moeketsi was arrested in the street by the business owner, while Zwane was arrested in a house in Reitz Street, where he was hiding inside a resident’s shower.

Ramphora says Zwane begged the owner of the house to let him go and said, “I won’t do it again.”

The third suspect allegedly fled on foot towards Geduld and is still at large.
