Bakerton family assaulted during robbery

A family of three from Sugarbird Street, Bakerton was traumatised by six armed suspects and had to be treated for shock by paramedics on Saturday.

A 40-year-old mother was at her car in the driveway of their house when she noticed a silver Mercedes Benz drive in and six armed suspects approach her.

According to Springs police spokesman, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the suspects took the woman inside the house, where she found her 16-year-old son and 21-year-old daughter already tied up with cable ties.

She was also tied up and the suspects assaulted her by slapping her several times when she didn’t respond to their demand to hand over the keys to the safe.

Ramphora says the woman was taken to the bedroom where she was slapped again before pointing out where the safe keys were kept.

After covering the mother with a blanket, the suspects also ransacked the house.

The robbers took jewellery from the safe, a TV, laptop, cellphone, clothes and car keys before they fled the scene.

Ramphora says the woman pressed the panic button, but when she got no response, she ran into the street to call for help.

Springs police responded to the call and found the woman’s children with cloths stuck in their mouths.

“The suspects kicked the boy and also hit him with the back of a firearm,” says Ramphora.

The family claim the stolen goods are valued at approximately R200 000.

A case of house robbery was opened at the police station.
