EMPD enforce law

The EMPD showed no mercy to drivers who refused to follow the rules of the road over the Easter holidays which resulted in a number of arrests, issuing of warnings and summons.

Springs and KwaThema

During this time the high visibility patrols and stop-and-searches in the Springs and KwaThema areas were conducted and the EMPD’s efforts yielded 10 driving under the influence of alcohol offenses, says EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago.

A total of 31 vehicles found to be unroadworthy and were impounded while 327 summons were issued for various offences including defects, documentation and moving violations.

He adds that in these areas, only one fatal accident occurred in the early hours of March 26 at around 1am, on Nigel Road in Sharon Park, Springs, where a single vehicle hit a lampole and one passenger died.

Two other passengers sustained serious injuries while the driver was arrested for drinking and driving offence.

Brakpan and Tsakane

The EMPD arrested 16 drivers for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Six suspects were also detained for possession of narcotics and one for possession of poison.

In addition, four unroadworthy vehicles were impounded and 217 summons were issued for various offences including invalid documentation and moving offences.

“Two fatal accidents in which two pedestrians were killed were recorded in Brakpan and Tsakane.

“On March 27 at 1am, at the intersection of Sindane and Ndhlovu in Tsakane, a 35-year-old male was killed in a hit-and-run incident while on March 28 at 8.30pm on Springs-West Road in Brakpan, a 37-year-old male was hit by a VW Polo and died on the scene,” he says.

Nigel and Duduza

In these areas there was high visibility patrols, foot patrols, stop-and-searches and roadblocks conducted from Thursday night throughout the Easter weekend.

The special operations, according to Kgasago, were aimed at those drivers behaving irresponsibly on public roads and to deter would be criminals as well as monitoring all the known hot spots.

“The operations commenced at 8pm and run until around 2am.

“Intensive special operations yielded 27 drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, while seven taverns were visited with the EMS personnel to ensure that safety regulations were adhered to and all seven taverns were issued with warning letters.

“There were also 288 summons issued for various offences which included moving violations, invalid documentation as well as for defects, one unroadworthy vehicle was taken off the road while eight accidents were attended to, with only slight injuries sustained,” he reports.

No fatal accidents for the whole of the Easter weekend were recorded in these areas.
