Open drain poses a danger to children

Residents of Derby Street, Springs Extension had to live with the smell of sewage for more than a week.

Christal van Niekerk (52) says several residents reported the blocked drain to the Ekurhuleni Metro, but nothing was done to clean the clogged sewer drain.

She noticed the overflowing drain last Monday and when she reported it, van Niekerk was hoping the metro would fix it on the same day.

“Filthy sewage water, empty two litre plastic bottles, plastic bags and other rubble popped up from the drain and was running down the street,” she says.

The metro cleared the sewage on Tuesday, but she feels the workers should also have replaced the cover of and cleaned the area around the drain.

According to van Niekerk, the drain cover has been missing for a long time.

“I do hope the metro will replace the cover as I am concerned that the small children playing in the street may fall in to it,” she adds.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of publishing.
