Springs man sentenced to 12 years for murdering his eight-year-old son

Springs resident Mlungisi Nxumalo (37) will spend the next 12 years in jail for filicide.

Filicide is the deliberate act of a parent killing their own child.

Nxumalo was found guilty for the murder of his son on June 4, 2014.

Magistrate Nkhensani Moila, presiding over the case in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on March 16, handed down a 12-year sentence for the death of his eight-year-old son, Siphesihle Madondo.

Nxumalo pleaded guilty to the murder charge and a plea agreement was reached.

The minimum sentence of 15 years for murder was reduced to 12 years due to extenuating circumstances.

Madondo’s body was found in an old mine shaft at the Windmill Park, CBD on June 4, 2014, leading to Nxumalo’s arrest almost six weeks later on July 16, 2014.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, when the body was discovered, Madondo was still in his school uniform.

The boy was living with his father at the time of the murder.

Ramphora says Madondo’s parents were arguing over the mother’s alleged affair on the morning of his death.

His father took the boy to the old mine shaft where the eight-year-old was violently shaken by his father until his neck was broken.

Nxumalo fled the scene after he killed his son.

A police hunt for Nxumalo started shortly after the murder and he was finally arrested in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal after the police received information of his whereabouts from members of his family.

Ramphora says Nxumalo’s bail application was denied in 2014 and he has been in jail since his arrest.

During his incarceration awaiting trial, he was sent to Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital for 30 days’ observation.

The report confirmed that he was fit to stand trial.

Nxumalo will serve his 12-year sentence in Modderbee Prison.
