Minors test positive for drugs

The EMPD, Springs police and the Department of Social Development were on the scene at a house in Dersley on Monday after a community member contacted Henry Harber of Wild Wild Guardians to report possible drug use on the premises.

This is the same house where one-year-old toddler drowned in a shallow swimming pool (Child drowns in Dersley) at the beginning of this month.

Upon arrival at the house on Monday afternoon, members of the joint operation tested approximately 20 people for the presence of drugs.

The tests showed that the majority of these people had drugs in their systems.

Included in the group were three minors, aged 14, 15 and 16 years of age, who all tested positive for drug use.

Sanet van Moerkerken, project manager at Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society confirms the joint operation and the drug testing that took place.

She says the case is currently at the Springs court to have the minors removed from the property.

“This is a serious matter and should be addressed urgently,” says van Moerkerken.

Harber says the court ruled that the minors should be arrested, however, he adds: “We are currently waiting for feedback from the police on this decision.”

The minors remain at the house until a decision is made.
