Eskom reveals load shedding prognosis for winter

Eskom's group chief executive, Brian Molefe, says the power system has been stable since August, resulting in seven months of no load shedding.

He also predicts no load shedding during the winter months.

“Our prognosis is that there will be no load shedding for summer, autumn and going into winter,” he says.

He further states that unit three of the Ingula Pumped storage scheme was synchronised with the national power grid on March 6.

“This is a critical milestone in the company’s efforts to build new generating capacity, to meet South Africa’s rising electricity demand,” he says.

“Once completed, in the next five years, our capacity expansion programme, which is the largest in the company’s history, will increase our generation capacity by 17 384 megawatts.

“This will enable us to provide security of electricity supply to South African homes and businesses, powering economic expansion and extending electricity to millions of households who currently rely on other fuel sources for domestic cooking and heating.”
