Last chance to register

Gauteng contributed 22.5% of all new voter registrations, with a total of 156 331 people who registered last Saturday and Sunday.

According to Kate Bapela, IEC spokesman, more than 1.3-million registered voters took the weekend to confirm their registration and update their details.

“In Gauteng, almost 52% of the new registrations were women,” she says.

In general, of 526 580 people who visited voting stations this weekend, 325 261 were new registrations, 280 787 were re-registrations and 89 462 visited to confirm and update their registrations in the same voting district.

Of the new registrations, a total of 325 261 people were under 30 years old.

“This means that there has been a significant response by young people to the call to register and we are grateful for this response.”

They are especially pleased with the response to the call for registered voters to use the opportunity to update their address details at their voting station, says Bapela.

The IEC has scheduled a final registration weekend on April 9 and 10, when all voting stations will again be open from 8am to 5pm.

Bapela says this will be the last opportunity for voters to register and update their registration particulars at their voting station.

The election date has not been announced yet.
