Seniors learn about communication

Residents from Awendgloed and Rusoord were treated to a morning of fun and talks on communication in a hall at Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck sports ground on Friday.

The morning is sponsored by social workers from the Department of Social Development.

Amishka Mungul and Annerie Ferreira, both social workers from the department, say they treat the seniors to a morning of fun twice a year.

“We ask them which professional subject they want a talk on, and always try to accommodate their wishes,” says Annerie.

The seniors enjoyed the communication and hearing talks very much and asked several questions which were answered by a local audiologist, Aretha Buys.

She explained that certain words can be confusing when someone experiences hearing loss.

Each of the 25 senior citizens received a free hearing test from Aretha, who offered her services on the day.

Amishka and Annerie always plan a few fun items for their guests and always have a lucky draw where more than one person can win lovely sponsored prizes.

Although Marietjie Les was the first lucky person to win a cooler box filled with surprise items, time ran out and the proceedings had to be cut short.

Trudie Scheepers from Awendgloed says the day is always filled with fun and laughter and they enjoyed the hot potato game, similar to musical chairs, a lot.

A soft toy called Bester, an elephant, was passed around to the beat of music.

“Once the music stopped, the person holding Bester is out,” says Trudie.

This was played until the final two, Marie van Zyl and Fergus Conn, were left.

Marie, from Rusoord, was the lucky winner and walked away with a cooler box filled with surprise goodies.

The sponsored items will be carried over to the next event in September.

Each guest also received a slab of chocolate before leaving.

The prizes were sponsored by Henry and Margie Harber from Wild Wild Guardians.
