Run for Bible project

Enthusiastic athletes annually use their energy to be part of the Bible Society of South Africa's Run for Bibles project to make it possible for others to obtain Bibles.

Marina Stebbing from the Bible Society of South Africa says athletes can choose which race they want to run for Bibles.

Any marathon, half-marathon or fun run will do, and athletes are sponsored per kilometre they run.

Interested athletes can take part in the Comrades Marathon, which takes place between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on May 29.

Other races which athletes can participate in to contribute to the work of the Bible Society include the Two Oceans, Loskopdam, Suikerbosrand and Nedbank City marathons.

“Put your running shoes on and set your stopwatch to join this year’s project,” says Marina.

Friends, family, church members or colleagues can sponsor athletes for each kilometre they run and help raise funds for the Bible Society.

Sponsor forms will be made available to athletes after registration forms for the race have been received by the society.

The money raised will be used during the races for a variety of projects aimed, among other things, to make Bibles available to poor people and for Bible translation.

The money will be used for the translation of the English Bible for the deaf and the distribution of Bibles to prisoners, to Grade Seven pupils in disadvantaged areas, and to people in South Africa’s neighbouring countries.
