N17 Hospital’s leap year baby

"My leap baby is a very special girl."

Busi Kwanyana (39) gave birth to Fortune Kwanyana at 9.49am at the N17 Hospital on Monday, February 29.

Fortune weighed 3.05kg at birth and was 50cm in length.

Busi agreed to have an epidural caesarian after her gynaecologist informed her that leap year babies are unique and very clever.

“I felt it was the right thing to do,” she says.

She claims the baby is good and drinks her bottle quite well.

Wazi Kwanyana (39, the baby’s father, is over the moon with their leap baby.

The couple’s 10-year-old daughter Karabo is excited about her leap baby sister and didn’t want to leave the hospital after she saw Fortune for the first time.

Celebrating Fortune’s birthday will be a challenge for the couple.

Busi says they have two options to celebrate Fortune’s birthday, either on February 28 or March 1.

Whatever date they choose, they will celebrate their baby girl’s birthday every year.

“With the next leap year cycle in 2020, we will celebrate Fortune’s fourth birthday from 6am to 6pm,” she says.

“Whether it is a children’s party, pajama party or adult party, we will party to celebrate,” she concludes.
