Video & pictures: Metro invites learners to learn about World Wetlands Day

The Ekurhuleni Metro commemorated World Wetlands Day, on Friday, with almost 200 learners invited to join in a day of learning and fun at Blesbokspruit Environmental Education Centre.

The day was themed ”Wetlands for our future; sustainable livelihoods” and learners were taught about the importance of preserving the wetlands.

Students from the three schools invited were requested to open the day with the national anthem and were joined by educators and wetland conservators.

Activities such as planting a tree, bird watching and water testing were planned for the students throughout the day.

Ward councillor, Dean Stone was also in attendance and he urged learners to pay careful attention to the importance of the wetlands.

Students were encouraged to do their bit in preserving the wetlands and recycling.

Lunch was served to students and educators and the activities started promptly afterwards.

Learners were split into three groups and sent off to learn about the Blesbokspruit and the importance of ensuring the water does not get contaminated.

The students were promised a day of learning and excitement as well as a chance to do their part for the environment.
