Suspects take truck batteries

Security guards were held at gunpoint in the guardroom at a business in Dahlia Road, Welgedacht, on Wednesday.

Four guards were in the guardroom at 10.30pm, behind a locked door, when they heard a knock on the door.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says the guards were surprised when they opened the door to find four suspects entering the room.

Two of the suspects were armed with firearms and pointed their guns at the guards while one suspect was armed with a ‘bobbejaan’ spanner and the fourth suspect was unarmed.

Ramphora says while two suspects ordered the guards to lie down on the floor, the other two suspects left the room.

When they returned they asked one of the guards where the other company guards were.

The security guard at the company next door noticed something was wrong and called the business owner, who arrived shortly after the phone call.

“When the police arrived on the scene, the suspects fled, but one them, a 34-year-old man, was caught by the police,” says Ramphora.

The suspects took a cellphone, amplifier, four truck batteries, a panic remote control and a DVD player.

A case of business robbery was opened at the police station and the case is being investigated as the search for the other three suspects continues.
