Metrorail suspends service

Trains to Springs, Daveyton and Dunswart suspended with immediate effect.

The Gauteng Metrorail has issued a statement confirming that, with immediate effect, trains along the Springs, Daveyton and Dunswart corridor have been suspended.

No tickets, including weeklies and monthlies will be sold as there is currently no time frame set for how long the suspension of serives will last.

This decision follows the recent burning of a train in Boksburg, the latest in a growing number of attacks on both the company’s rolling stock and their drivers.

The statements claims that since November at least 67 Metrorail drivers and guards have been attacked, putting their lives in danger. It also claims there has also been an increase in commuter intimidation.

“It is very unfortunate that we have to get to a decision to completely shut down this service due to the fact that we do not have train drivers who can risk their lives and serve people who have no appreciation of the vital role they play – to safety transport all commuters to their destinations on a daily basis,” the statement reads.

“Gauteng Metrorail management condemns these acts in the strongest terms and have activated support from other law enforcement agencies to assist in  protection of commuters, staff and assets.”
