Soccer team assists with needy children

Donald Sekgobela, an Eastvale resident, assisted in starting a development soccer academy after seeing many young children walking the streets and parks.

The Martial Eagles soccer academy varies in age groups between 13 years and older and competed in the Imbewu Enhle festive games in Daveyton last year.

Donald, who also started collecting and donating school shoes for children in need in 2011, feels it is his duty to assist children.

“The idea for the school shoes came after witnessing many children going to school barefoot. It reminded me of my childhood when I didn’t have shoes for school,” says Donald.

He believes that offering a child a pair of school shoes gives them hope for the future.

His school shoe initiative has grown dramatically over the last five years and he is now also able to donate stationery and uniforms.

On Saturday, Donald and his soccer teams cooked meals and prepared packages to donate to the underprivileged children in the Skoonplaas, Daveyton and Springs areas.

“I thank the retirement village in Skoonplaas for allowing us to use their premises to hold our donation day,” says Donald.

The Martial Eagles not only assisted with the set-up, cooking and donations, but also played soccer with the children.

The soccer team plans on joining the Eastern league in March to showcase its talent.

Donald urges all residents to assist where they can in helping the underprivileged children in our society.
