The metro has yet to fix the power problem in Springs CBD

The street lights in Fourth Street have not been working since Monday, according to shop owners and residents -- and the Ekurhuleni Metro is aware of the problem.

“The power went out on Monday morning and has not come back on,” says Gloria Mwenye, who works at Hoppies pharmacy.

Gloria, who also resides in a block of flats on Fourth Street, says the power has been affected there, too.

“Our food is no longer edible, all the food in the fridge needed to be thrown away,” adds Gloria.

Mohammed Didar, who owns a small supermarket on Fourth Street, will have to get rid of his poultry and dairy products as he does not have a generator.

“All my fridge stock went off and I have to throw it away now,” he says.

His ice cream fridge was filled with ice cream that had already melted.

The shop owners who do not have a generator are concerned about the business and money they are losing due to the power outage.

A wholesaler in the same street is concerned about the length of time for which the power will be off, as their generator cannot pull enough power to keep all their food fresh for too long.

The owner of a local business has contacted the metro, but has not received any answers as to when the power will be back on.

“The power station seems to have been the cause of the power problem, it is submerged in water,” claims another concerned shop owner.

The metro has not yet commented on when the power will be restored, or what caused the problem.
